Be Provoked

30th March 2019

Scripture Reading: 1 Samuel 1: 1-28

Focus

"And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the LORD had shut up her womb. 7. And as he did so year by year, when she went up to the house of the LORD, so she provoked her; therefore she wept, and did not eat.” (1 Samuel 1: 6-7)

In Hannah’s journey to her miracle, one major character that featured was Peninnah. Peninnah was that co-wife of Hannah who had children at a time when Hannah was barren. Peninnah had results at a time when Hannah had none, and it became her leverage to taunt Hannah. Peninnah was one person who literally made Hannah see the need to have her own child. Peninnah made Hannah uncomfortable in her situation.

Friend, in your journey to greatness, you need people who will make you uncomfortable in the midst of what is not working. You need people who will make you uncomfortable with mediocrity; you need people who will make you uncomfortable with your current level; you need people who will make you uncomfortable with the prolonged absence of certain results in your life; you need people who make you realize that all is not well.

Peninnah was no pretender that would comfort Hannah and tell her that it was okay to be barren. She simply made things seem as bitter as they really were. Be grateful to God for those who tell you the truth no matter how bitter it may come across. Be grateful for those who speak the truth to you about your life even if everyone is telling you lies; be grateful for those who may sound like haters but tell you all you need to know and be aware of.

Peninnah kept driving Hannah crazy until Hannah got the message and took one strategic trip to Shiloh and her story changed. What looked like evil words from Peninnah made Hannah to swing into action until the story changed for good. When the Peninnah’s of this world drive you crazy, take up their challenge and pray for things to change; take up your Peninnah’s challenge and demand for fresh results that will make you smile.

Peninnahs may sound like haters, but you definitely need them if you must move forward from where you are to where you should be.

Declaration
