Scripture Reading: 2 King 9: 1-13

Focus

“And Elisha the prophet called one of the children of the prophets, and said unto him, Gird up thy loins, and take this box of oil in thine hand, and go to Ramothgilead:” (2 Kings 9: 1)

One remarkable fact about Elisha is that at the time when Elijah would be taken back to heaven by chariots of fire, he demanded for a double portion of the spirit (and power) that was upon Elijah (see 2 Kings 2). Elisha wanted to be more than Elijah was. He wanted to do better than the man he was about to replace. Elijah had done an amazing job as prophet, he had done great exploits, but Elisha simply wanted more.

Friend, can you be counted amongst those who, like Elisha, want to be more than the Elijahs that have gone ahead? Can you be counted amongst those whose desire is to do better than their fathers? Can you be counted amongst those whose desire is to be more and do more than others have done? Can you be counted amongst those who seek to carry more of the power of God than others have been seen to carry?

It’s easy to admire the fact that Elisha did more miracles than Elijah did, it’s easy to admire the fact that Elisha represented that generation that does better than the fathers, but the basis of all of that, is that he first sought to carry more power than other sons of the prophets were willing to carry. He began by seeking to be more. He began by seeking to carry more than was convenient. He began by wanting more than others want.

Greatness may forever elude you until you come to a point of wanting to carry more than is convenient for you to carry. Greatness may elude you until you make yesterday’s excellence to be a standard of today’s mediocrity. Greatness may elude you until you arrive at that point where you dissatisfied with what you may have been previously satisfied with. Greatness begins with the heart that says that yesterday’s standard is not good enough to be carried over into a new season.

Dare to be counted amongst the better generation that is set to do more and be more. Dare to be that one who is prepared to carry more than others are willing to carry.
