No Accursed Thing

25th September 2022

Scripture Reading: Joshua 5: 13-15, 6: 1-20

Focus

“And ye, in any wise keep yourselves from the accursed thing, lest ye make yourselves accursed, when ye take of the accursed thing, and make the camp of Israel a curse, and trouble it.” (Joshua 6: 18)

In our Focal Scripture, God instructed the children of Israel not to touch the accursed thing in Jericho. They were to possess the land of Jericho, but God Himself outlawed some items that were available in Jericho. God gave them the land but would not allow them take some things that were available in the land. God gave them the land but instructed them to keep some things off limit. There was a restriction that came with their new season.

Friend, as you move closer to that new season you have always desired from the Lord, note that there are restrictions. There are things the Lord would not have you touch in your Jericho. There are relationships He would not have you retain or engage in. There are things that cannot mix with your new season. There are things that may be acceptable to some people but unacceptable in your own life. There are new season restrictions.

What the Lord commanded Joshua not to touch, was being touched by the people who originally lived in Jericho. It was okay for the old season but not okay in the new season. It was okay for the destinies that were about to be wiped out, but not okay for the destinies of them that were to take over. Some things you want to ‘touch’ may have been permissible in your old season but not in your new season. It may be okay for others, but not you.

In subsequent verses of scripture (Joshua 7), Achan touched the accursed thing, and the anger of the Lord broke out until he was killed. Whatever restrictions the Lord has placed on your new season, respect it, keep your distance, before it makes you lose the same grounds you prayed for. Don’t touch the accursed thing simply because others are touching it. Don’t accept it because it is acceptable to people around you.

Remember, the children of Israel were in a covenant with God, and by virtue of the covenant, what was acceptable to the inhabitants of Jericho became unacceptable by divine demand. Ask God to help you discern what is not needed as you possess your Jericho.

Declaration

I refuse to touch the accursed thing in my Jericho, in Jesus’ name!
